Music Therapy: Enhancing Quality of Life for Memory Care Residents

Updated: Dec 12, 2019

Thanks to your generosity, in 2019 the Capitol Lakes Foundation was able to provide funding for licensed music therapists to implement a five month therapy group focused on residents in our memory care unit. The goal of the therapy sessions was to improve verbal communication, alertness, and mood prior to dinner when residents are most tired and therefore less apt to engage with each other and staff.

Staff members noted that the therapy was a success, significantly decreasing the anxiety of one resident who struggles with sun-downing dementia and improving the moods of most residents during a difficult time of day.

“The residents were in a happier mood after the music therapy group....The benefits carried over into dinner. Some [residents] were still humming

during dinner!"
