Thanks to your generous support, Capitol Lakes residents in Assisted Living and the Health Center are regularly uplifted through the transformative power of music. Twice a month, board-certified music therapists lead two unique music therapy groups that bring joy, connection, and emotional release to participants, no matter their age or cognitive ability.
Music & Memory: Songs That Spark Connection

One of the groups, Music & Memory, is specially designed for residents living with dementia. Through familiar songs, gentle prompts, and thoughtful discussions, the group helps unlock memories, stimulate minds, and foster connection.
“There is always a feeling of camaraderie during these songs and the discussions that follow,” says Abbie Hays, one of our music therapists. Music becomes a bridge—to the past, to emotions, and to each other.
In one session, residents broke into smiles and laughter when "Beer Barrel Polka" played. The room lit up with conversation about old dances and parties. In another, "Side by Side" became more than just a song—it sparked heartfelt stories about lifelong friendships, beloved spouses, and the community residents find in each other during these shared moments.
Abbie recalls a particularly touching group session where a song struck a personal chord with one resident. As the music played, he opened up about his late wife and memories with his father. “We had a brief but meaningful discussion about grief and how music is able to hold space for and bring forward so many memories that are often tucked away in our minds,” Abbie says. “We sat in a moment that intertwined both grief and the joy of memories. Music opened up the conversation and supported the emotions that are often difficult to acknowledge, let alone share.”
Drumming: Rhythm, Joy, and a Feeling of Youth

In addition to the memory-based group, Abbie also leads a drumming class that welcomes any interested resident. These sessions challenge participants to keep complex rhythms along to familiar tunes—a physical and cognitive workout wrapped in fun and music.
“Honestly, the thing that sticks out most to me is seeing the look of pride and triumph on the faces of residents when they are able to successfully play more difficult rhythms,” says Abbie.
Even those with rhythm in their bones find joy in the familiarity of songs from different decades and genres. Whether it’s mouthing lyrics, singing along, or simply nodding in time with the beat, each resident connects in their own way.
One resident, reflecting on the experience, smiled and said, “It made me feel young again.”
