When Jamie McCarville needed foot surgery, she knew exactly where she wanted to recover. A downtown Madison resident, Jamie is a long-time member of Capitol Lakes’ Wellness Center and especially enjoys the warm water pool, which helps tremendously with her arthritis. So when it came time for rehabilitation, choosing Capitol Lakes’ Health Center was an easy decision.
A part of her recovery process was keeping her foot elevated at all times, but having to do that in bed was understandably not preferred. Jamie requested to have a recliner brought to her room. Luckily for her, the Capitol Lakes Foundation had recently purchased six new recliners for Health Center patient use thanks to the generosity of donors and supporters. The impact for Jamie was profound. As she said:
“I love this chair and am so appreciative to be able to use it.”

Kristi Vater, Health Center Administrator, requested the grant because she understands how important it is for residents like Jamie to comfortably put their feet up during the day without having to be in bed. As she says:
“Patients coming in from the hospital were often disappointed when they could not have a recliner in their room (either due to size or availability), as they were accustomed to having them in the hospital. These chairs fit nicely in all rooms. The lift feature is also helpful. When residents are ready to get up the chair can assist them, which is much easier than using a mechanical lift.”
The chair is just one reason Jamie is glad she picked Capitol Lakes for her rehab stay. As she says:
“The staff here are great – smart, compassionate, and discrete. I also enjoy all the available programs which help make the time go faster. I hope I can come back here when I have my knee surgery later this year.”
For Jamie and others recovering at Capitol Lakes, something as simple as a comfortable chair can make all the difference. Thanks to your generosity, residents experience greater comfort, independence, and care when they need it most.
