Writing your life story can unlock memories, strengthen your mind, and create a lasting legacy for your family. Thanks to the generous support of donors like you, the Capitol Lakes Foundation recently sponsored a memoir writing workshop for Capitol Lakes residents. The six-week workshop, Start Writing Your Life Story, offered a unique opportunity for residents to explore their past, share meaningful experiences, and connect with others through storytelling.

How Writing Benefits the Mind and Family Connections
Writing about personal experiences does more than preserve memories. Research shows that reflecting on life stories can improve brain function and mental clarity. For older adults, this kind of creative engagement helps keep the mind active and sharp. Beyond individual benefits, sharing family stories helps younger generations understand values like resilience, courage, and honesty. These stories become a bridge between generations, strengthening family bonds and passing on important lessons.
What the Workshop Offered

The workshop was led by Sarah White, a published author and personal historian with over 15 years of experience teaching reminiscence writing. Sarah guided participants through key aspects of memoir writing, including:
Storytelling techniques to make memories vivid and engaging
Organizing a writing project to create a clear narrative
Ethical considerations when writing about living people
Each week, participants received suggested themes and prompts to write 2-3 pages. The sessions included time for sharing work in a supportive environment, allowing residents to hear different perspectives and gain encouragement.
Resident Experience and Gratitude
The workshop not only helped residents develop writing skills but also fostered a sense of accomplishment and community. Many left with new ideas and motivation to continue writing beyond the six weeks.
Here is what some residents had to say about the opportunity:
Thank you for supporting the workshop.
Thank you Capitol Lakes Foundation for providing this exceptional class.
I am very glad I took this class. Thanks to the Foundation for making it possible.
